AS the star of a string of blockbuster action movies, stunning Scarlett Johansson has been in some tight spots. But none has been tighter than the leather catsuit she wears as a sexy spy in upcoming movie Marvel Avengers Assemble.
Speaking from the set in New Mexico, she said: “Everybody on the film has their own uncomfortable costume situation. It’s like 800° in mine. And it’s a one-piece and I have nothing underneath it.” According to Scarlett, costumes in Marvel Avengers Assemble are the most daring of her career to date.
She described the cast’s dressing process as “very surreal”, adding: “It was kind of an out-of-body experience. Like a dress-up, but to the extreme. “Everybody looks incredibly uncomfortable until the cameras are rolling. “Then we all look badass. And when the Avengers assemble, it feels like being a little kid.
“Then, cut! And we’re all like, ‘Arrgh, God, get this thing off me.’ As soonas everything is cut, everything comes off. “All our costumes are unzipped, some air conditioning venting unit goes in,someone is having a wig removed… we all have our various things that wehave to do to get comfortable.”
Scarlett is reprising the role of Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow first seenin 2010’s Iron Man 2.She says her decision to star alongside Robert Downey Jr and Chris Evans in Marvel’s new adventure epic came out of a desire to please her fans.
“Going into this process, and even going into Iron Man 2, the whole idea isthat you want the audience to be as enthusiastic as you are about the characters.
Getting divorced is the loneliest thing you’ll ever do. It’s horrible “And in that, you hope that you’ll be able to take the character further.
“It’s certainly a process to zip up the suit every time and it gets harderwith each passing year.“But it was badass and it incorporated the darker side of the character — andgot down to the nitty gritty of who she is.”
Marvel Avengers Assemble tells the story of superspy Colonel Nick Fury and hisinternational agency S.H.I.E.L.D.They bring together a team of superhumans and superheroes to save the earth from evil deity Loki and his army of villains.
Scarlett’s role forced her into a punishing physical regime which has left her in superb shape. She even polished her fighting skills. She said: “There have been months of training and stunts and fighting. I will probably be in physical therapy for years. There’s a lot of hand-to-hand combat and a combination of different fighting styles — gymnastics, Muay Thai, boxing, kick-boxing, I do all that.
“And we use all kinds of stuff, knives, guns, all sorts.”Scarlett confesses she has a particular soft spot for 31-year-old English actor Tom Hiddleston, who plays Loki.
She said: “I absolutely adore working with Tom. He’s so incredibly talented, there’s a theatrical way about him. He’s just been great, he’s having so much fun with that character.”
Marvel Avengers Assemble marks the re-emergence of Scarlett in Hollywood aftera period of traumas that included her divorce from Canadian-born star Ryan Reynolds and a subsequent failed relationship with actor Sean Penn. The New York-based actress recently confirmed in Vogue magazine that she had been seeing Penn, who is Madonna’s ex.
As she graced the cover, she revealed: “We spent time together, yeah. I neverput a title on it, really, but we were seeing each other. He’s a remarkable person, he really is.”
Scarlett said there was intense scrutiny over the relationship, which was “a little bit of an adjustment” compared to the relative privacy she had while married to Green Lantern star Reynolds for two years from September 2008.
She added: “We always kept our story private — how we met, our wedding, everything. It was just about us.”
Scarlett finished filming Iron Man 2 in the summer of 2010 and knew Marvel Avengers Assemble was coming later — but took a long time hunting for her next film.
She said: “It was nice but at the same time, I was like, ‘What am I going to do with myself?’ I was feeling very out of my own skin.” And she said of the divorce: “It was horrible. Of course it’s horrible. It was
devastating. It really throws you. You think that your life is going to be one way then, for various reasons, it doesn’t work out.
“This was something I never thought I would be doing.“And there’s no way to navigate it, nobody can give you the right answer. It’s the loneliest thing you’ll ever do.”
But despite all that, she has no regrets about the marriage. She said: “It was a beautiful thing — the falling in love and getting married and making that commitment. It’s nice to know that you’re capable of loving somebody in that way. It’s a rare opportunity. I don’t feel on the other side of it completely but it gets better.
“More than anything, it’s just that not having your buddy around all the time is weird.” She described the couple’s split as “comically amicable”.
Headlines appeared in December 2010 that they had split and they released a statement saying: “We entered our relationship with love and it’s with love and kindness we leave it. While privacy isn’t expected, it’s certainly appreciated.”
More recently she has been dating New York–based advertising creative director Nate Naylor, who she says must be feeling strange about being chased by paparazzi but had been “remarkably good” about it.
Scarlett has also spoken recently about naked images of her that were meant for Ryan being leaked on the internet. The alleged perpetrator was arrested and faces a number of charges after Scarlett said she didn’t want to let the crime slide.
She went out for dinner soon after the photos came out… and admits she wondered if everyone in the restaurant had seen her nude.
